WHAT IS EXTREMISM?

Extremism these days is seen to be a negative thing because of terrorists such as the Islamic State and the destruction they do to people of society these days. However Extremism has had a very positive impact on both politics and society in the past, as well as changing the way people view the world. Some extremists have made this world feel safer for foreign people or people of a darker colour.

extremists that have made a positive impact

Martin luther king jr.

Martin Luther King was a well known activist and became the most visible spokesman, and a wonderful leader in the civil rights movement. He fought for the rights of darker skinned people through non violence. Martin Luther King has had a great impact on this world, and without his arguments darker skinned people may be yet to have rights. People of darker skin now feel safer to live in this world thanks to Martin Luther King. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 award for fighting racial inequality in a non violent way. Unfortunately, he was assassinated in 1968.

malala yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist that fought for women's rights to go to school in the same non violent way that Martin Luther King Jr. did. She fought for human rights, and especially the Taliban for young women to go to school. She and two other girls were shot by the Taliban in an assassination attempt, however she survived. Without Malala, Pakistani young girls would not have the right to go to school. She has had a positive impact on the world by using non violence and helping us become equal.

negative extremists

To this day, extremism has a very bad reputation because of these kinds of extremists. Although they fight for their rights like Yousafzai and King, they tend to act in a violent way; using weapons to kill and scare people into their beliefs.

The islamic state

ISIS (The Islamic State) is a Salafi jihadist terrorist organisation that is constantly talked about today. They are responsible for many terrorist attacks that we hear in the media because the media target them. these may be the Paris attacks, the bombing in Manchester arena, etc.
Many people fear ISIS and that is exactly what they want. We need to learn that the people targeted by the media aren't the only extremists in existence, because this causes Islamophobia. Many Muslims today feel unsafe in their homes or are assaulted because of Islamophobia; which is rather discriminated against all Muslims... Since only a small selection of them are members of ISIS. I think that Islamophobic people are also Extremists, in a sense.

ku klux klan

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is an extremist group that believe in things such as white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-immigration, Nordicism and anti-Catholicism. In order to get their ways they use terrorism; physical assault, murder, and close to anything that will do harm.
They are negative because they have a desire to hurt and kill people just to get their own way.

Why do we need to be aware of extremism?

Over time, the amount of extremists in the UK has increased a large amount.
The amount of far right extremists has soared by 30% in the past year.
Far right extremists support people like Hitler, and can be a large threat to our country.
Islamophobia has also increased greatly. Islamophobic attacks soared more than 500% since the terrorist attacks in Manchester Arena and I feel people should be more aware of the danger that not only ISIS are causing, but those against ISIS are causing danger too. I think that it is important for children to be aware of extremism in order for them to have a bigger understanding on the world around us and not grow up to be like the Islamophobic people causing harm to the people of our country, no matter what religion they are.
